Feel for yourself what timing you seem appropriate. (like the other post states: murderhobos can be a challenge) However, the mission gives you enough opportunity to sprinkle in violence and action. Tell the team that finding out the real story behind everything is a detective style part of the run. Give Maria different intonations for every state of concioussness she is in. If you play online, try to work with your voice and spend some time beforehand setting up good audio quality, even if you talk loud or "in character". Because of the changes in the dynamic of the NPC interactions, enhanced by Maria living out her different personas, the GM should always have a clear view where the team stands, what they know and how NPCs react to them at that point in time.Ī good GM can make a huge difference in the enjoyment factor of the table.
It is important for you as GM that you really understand what is happening with the involved parties and respective NPCs at different times of the run. The runners have no idea whats really going on behind the scenes for a big proportion of the job. In Maria Mercurial the plot provides a lot of false leads in the run. In my opinion the MM-Mission proves to be challenging for a GM more than other straight forward "get the job - legwork -action - payment"-missions. The run took several evenings and a lot of time was spend on legwork and careful planing which actually worked great versus the plannend encounters and resulted in a lot of money (and karma) for easy, well played action. The team went non-violant where possible, using social skills, invisibility, drones and several well defended hideouts, before coming up with a non-scripted story twist and a win-win end situation for most involved parties.
